The Pro Dromi® system was developed based on a concept by 14 farmers in collaboration with researchers at Wageningen University and the Pig Innovation Centre Sterksel and is produced by Vereijken.
Key features
One of the Pro Dromi® systems key features is balancing the thermal climate of the sows and piglets by providing a generous creep space called the Pro Dromi® Nanny.
This has partly been designed as a result of large litters requiring additional interventions to aid survival. The Pro Dromi® provides for the sow, piglets and staff by ensuring:
The sow is given
- Space to move freely (if crate left open)
- Opportunity to nest-build (if crate left open pre-farrowing)
- Support in lying-down situations
The piglets are given
- Safe udder access (crate closed post-farrowing)
- Large creep environment
- Reduced spread of infection between pens
The staff are ensured
- Fast and safe inspection of piglets via the Pro Dromi Nanny
- Ability to cross-foster easily during lock-in period
- Easy maintenance of good hygiene in the pens
How to build a Pro Dromi® system
ProDromi® farrowing crates are available in three different configurations:
ProDromi® I is a traditional farrowing crate;
ProDromi ® I ½, in which the crate is adjustable and the sow can be fixed, as well as set loose. The pen typically measures 7.5m2;
ProDromi® II, is a farrowing crate in which the sow can walk around freely.
