The Comfort Farrowing Pen was designed by researchers in Norway at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, and developed together with Fjossystemer and cooperating pig farmers. This system was previously known as the UMB Farrowing pen.

Key features
The sow is given:
- Freedom of movement at all times
- Opportunity to nest-build
- Sloped walls for support in lying-down situations
- Rubber mattress (3cm deep) in the nest provides “comfort flooring”
- Opportunity to contact neighbouring sows
- Opportunity to dung and feed away from nest-site
- Sub-floor heating panels in the nest area to allow thermal comfort
The piglets are given:
- Opportunity for close udder contact
- Sub-floor heating panels in the nest area to provide thermal comfort away from sow lying site
- Sloped walls for protection during sow lying events
- Rubber mattress (3cm deep) in the nest provides “comfort flooring”
- Reduced spread of infection between pens
- Opportunity to experience an enriched environment
- Opportunity to dung away from resting areas
The staff are assured:
- Easy maintenance of good hygiene in the pens (separate dunging area)
- Easy provision of nest building materials
